Food for Thought: Adulting

A few weeks ago, one of our daughters called about her health insurance while trying to read an EOB (Explanation of Benefits). She called it an "adulting" moment.


"Adulting" is a word that our girls use often when talking about things they never had to do while they were growing up and didn't learn about in school - things like balancing a check book, reading an EOB, buying a car, buying car insurance, choosing work benefits, budgeting, etc. The list is long and many of these things are necessary parts of adult life, but they tend to be things you have to learn as you encounter them.


What kinds of things do you consider adulting? Who do you go to when you need help understanding these types of things? If you have adult children, do they seek your advice about them?

Funny, when it came to trying to understand EOBs, I went to my #1 daughter for help. That stuff was up her occupational line of expertise as a biller in doctors offices. Same with other health insurance matters. Now that all my medical is at the VA, EOBs and health insurance isn't a biggie anymore. My Ex and I learned how to do things like balancing checkbooks in high school when they still taught real life skills. We then taught our kids those necessary life skills as their schools were either failing to teach those, or WE were the teachers, i.e., homeschool.. They don't come to us as much anymore as they are well into adult life themselves and have…
